Origin of the Torbay Budgerigar & Foreign Bird Society

The Torbay Budgie and Foreign Bird Society (B&FBS) was founded following an inauguration meeting held at St Andrews church hall
Sands Road Paignton in the autumn of 1968. The society was a breakaway from the Paignton cage bird society which had existed in Paignton for several decades prior to that time. During those years there had also existed a fur and feather association and a Paignton fanciers association. All these original organisations some of which
had been around since the early days of the twentieth century
have now ceased to exist. The originators of the Torbay B&FBS
were Jeff Attwood and Bernard Roach (now deceased) who were
former members of the Paignton caged bird society, but wished to
form a specialist society for budgerigars and foreign birds which could provide information for those breeders who wished to learn more of their hobby from informed speakers at regular meetings, something that was not done at the Paignton cage bird society, and also in due course arrange specialist open shows.
The inaugural meeting was well attended by fanciers not only locally, but also from as far away as Plymouth. The highlight for us was that

were there to support us. Members of the Plymouth B&FBS came along to wish us well and presented
us with a large silver cup named the ‘welcome cup’ which we still have in our possession and compete for at the annual show.
A committee was easily formed and plans put in place, regular members meetings were held at the Preston conservative club in the small committee room on the first floor. The society began to grow in numbers and often would attract up to eighty members to a meeting, some standing on the landing and stairs to listen to the speakers.
Our first show was held at the Torquay town hall in castle circus July 1971 and attracted several
hundred entries, and at the time the society hosted the western counties B&FBS club show, in excess
of one thousand seven hundred entries were received.
During 1993 we celebrated our silver Jubilee at the Preston conservative Club and invited not only existing members but also former committee members and officers that could be contacted. It all was very well attended and everyone had a great evening, once again also supported by Harry Bryan and Angela Moss.
Now during 2008 we shall celebrate our fortieth anniversary. Our society has passed through some difficult times and like many clubs and societies who have ceased to exist, we have ourselves come very close to closing. However at the moment we are quite buoyant, looking forward to our fortieth annual show on the 20th July 2008 and occasionally attracting new members, including our first junior member for several years. Young Thomas Salem, who is very keen to learn and already has his own Budgie website.
Sadly many of our original member are no longer with us, including Harry Bryan and Angela Moss, but we still look to the future with confidence and optimism to the next ten years, and at the that time celebrating our half century.
